For the complete playlist, click READ MORE below This was one of the most difficult and dramatic episodes in the history of the show. Difficult because it all happened during the worst part of the Covid19 pandemic, when we were suffering from a serious case of ‘podcaster's block’. Dramatic because we felt guiltier and guiltier every time we postponed its making. In short, our much warranted and repeatedly announced homage to Moraes Moreira took ages to be formatted and executed. Our way out of the gridlock was to produce the show in a different way: as our ‘quarentined’ birthdays were coming up, we made a Facebook live-video broadcast and later edited it down into an audio podcast. The show describes and celebrates the long and prolific career of the recently (well, kind of) deceased legend of Brazilian music. Between the early seventies and... ![]() For the live B'day video, click on the photo. Between the early seventies and the late eighties he was involved in many revolutionary moments in our music. Unfortunately, since we had so much to say about Novos Baianos, we only got to highlight Moreira’s contribution to other amazing aspects of the Brazilian sound of the seventies. Neither did we get to give the other members of his seminal band the room we felt they deserved in the show (for that we'd need another episode, but we were done with the drama!). So our apologies to Baby Consuelo, Galvão, Pepeu Gomes and the musicians that later formed A Cor do Som. You guys get to be a regular feature of the CAS show, anyhow. Moraes released at least 25 original albums. He wrote a book about Novos Baianos (A História dos Novos Baianos e Outros Versos). Even adding a bonus half hour to the podcast version, we had to leave whole albums (and the final 20 years of his career!) out of the show's playlist. But hey! All that is the guilt trip talking! You can be sure that, with all our perceived shortcomings, a CAS Moraes Moreira special can only be one thing: a great listen. Our vids of the week are: Moraes Moreira - Carnaval em cada esquina This video is from 1998, apparently, showing Moraes performing during the Carnival, at the legendary square in Salvador called Pelourinho. This song is from his album 'Lá Vem o Brasil Descendo a Ladeira', released in 1979. At this stage of his career, due to disagreements about the increasing touristification of Carnival in Bahia, Moraes was already out of the big stages and the 'prime time' of Salvador's Carnival, Moraes Moreira e Dodô & Osmar - Pombo Correio This music video was created by TV Globo in1976 to promote the partnership between Moraes and Trio Elétrico Dodô e Osmar. Notice the amazingly tacky choreography of the mail men. Moraes Moreira - Meninas do Brasil Here Moraes sings on the Brazilian version of "MTV Unplugged" (1995) one of his most beautiful songs, a homage to the free spirit of the Brazilian women. Or girls, as the song refers by name to some of the children who were present. I know some will classify me as heretic, but this gem with lyrics by Fausto Nilo and song by Moraes is way more beautiful, inspired and representative of Brazilian women than 'Garota de Ipanema'. Sorry Vinícius, sorry Tom... Doc Novos Baianos Futebol Clube This is the cherry of our cake: a documentary produced for German TV and apparently never aired, registering the everyday routine of the hippie commune formed by the band Novos Baianos in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro right in their most creative moment. Here you see them all - Moraes, Pepeu, Galvão, Baby, the future A Cor Do Som and friends - in flesh and bone (mostly bones) with all their energy, spiritual connection and cavities. All that right below the complete playlist for CAS 508 !

Três meninas do Brasil, três corações democratas
