For the complete playlist, click READ MORE below So half the world's deejays are busying themselves with spitting out playlists every few minutes. What could the CAS offer that was different and inspiring? The idea suddenly dawned on us. We had stumbled upon an orisha responsible for all illness: Obaluaiê. A bit of further reading and we realize that he masters epidemic deseases in particular! But not all is doom and gloom about the deity. As a friend puts it: by making one aware of their inescapable death, Obaluaiê makes you behave more responsibly in this life. The fact that he is not one of the "pop-star" orishas means that we only found top quality information about him, making for a top quality show: music- and content-wise. Though we never tire to state that we are not experts, our friends who are seem to have approved. So listen in for all the interesting narratives about this fascinating character in the African-Brazilian mythology. More interesting trivia and videos below.
Our vids of the week are:
Vinicius de Moraes & Toquinho - Meu Pai Oxalá We start with a short clip of Vinícius de Moraes and Toquinho playing the song 'Meu pai Oxalá', one of the themes present in the very popular soap opera O Bem Amado, 1973. It's just a fragment but the laid back situation talks a lot about Vinícius and his public image. A poet, intelectual and diplomat who enjoyed Brazilian culture and his inseparable glass of whisky. Check out the lyrics below. Moraes Moreira - Grito de Guerra In this recording of a TV 1981 gig Caetano presents Moraes Moreira for a set of songs that where emblematic of the Carnival from Bahia at the time. There's a lot to be said about this theme, specifically. But you'll learn more about it in our next show, that will be about Moraes, his music and his times. Luedji Luna - Obaluaye Here Luedji Luna sings a version of Obaluayê, theme composed by Abigail Cecílio de Moura and originally performed by Orquestra Afro-Brasileira in 1957. A show called "Acorda Amor" aired by Programa Livre. Mingo Silva - Povo do Ayê Mingo Silva singing his beautiful song about Obaluaê composed by him, Jamaica and Luís Caffé in a special video clip with material gathered among his friends during these pandemic times. Produced by Cazim Filmes. Check out the lyrics below. Kiko Dinucci & Juçara Marçal - Atotô The song Atotô from their album Padê is performed by Kiko Dinucci and Juçara Marçal in a live concert recording -but with decent sound - at the 26° "Porto Alegre em Cena", on 19 September 2019. Check out the lyrics below. Angela Maria - Babalu Angela Maria and Waldir Calmon made popular in Brazil the Cuban hit Babalu, composed by Margarida Lecuona. In this video she described how their sound engineer recorded their first - and definite - version of the song while they were only rehearsing. When Angela and Waldir said "lets record it" he said that there was no need for that. Check out the lyrics below. Miguelito Valdez - Babalu Miguelito Valdez has films showing him singing his version of Babalu, some of them as parts of feature films. For me this is one of the best, showing his stage performance in opposition to the Hollywood voodoo imagery of many others. Pauliceia Cultural - Samba da Quarentena A product of our social distancing times, this video by a collective of musicians from São Paulo called Paulicéia Cultural is a little gem. More than 25 artists sang in this clip, many of them artists featured in CAS playlists. Check it out. Xênia França - Comportamento Geral Last but not least, a great version of Comportamento Geral. Originally composed and recorded by Gonzaguinha, here sung by Xênia França in another clip from the show "Acorda Amor" aired by Programa Livre. Check out the lyrics below.
