Well, one day we have to end the celebrations for our 500th episode landmark, right? I hope you listeners had as much fun listening as we did making this trilogy. We have to praise Kika Serra for having the idea and the patience to compile and classify the bands according to the number of times we've played them over the years. We don’t want to place undue importance on that list, really. Some artists have been with us since the early days of the show, and those naturally have an advantage over more recent discoveries. So we can't say we love this or that artist "more" based on their position on those charts. But they did provide us with great material for three classic shows, no doubt. ![]()
Also: we play such a huge variety of bands (over 2,600 have been heard in our show at least once) that the "number one" artist on that list was featured only... 11 times! Yes, we were surprised too. But back to our point here: it’s not a huge difference in absolute numbers, you see?
If episode 500 focused on the "indie" top 20 - for lack of a better word - and episode 501 kept going down the same list, in the present show we feature the older generation that also tops our charts alongside those youngsters. In the process of compiling the playlist we realized that our musical taste probably has a clear profile. What would it be? Goth? Punk melody? You'll find our musings in the show, just listen to the damned thing, will you? And now for something completely different. Here's a POP QUIZ! An ex-president of Brazil is mentioned in the lyrics of two songs in this episode. Who is he/she? Which songs is he/she mentioned in? If you're the first to answer both questions correctly HERE you'll get yourself a free CAS T-shirt designed by Kika Serra. The fifth and the tenth to answer will get an LP-sized poster of their most loved CAS episode artwork. Why the random numbers? Probably for the same reason we shouldn't be engineers. Our vids of the week are: Marku Riba - Zamba Ben One of our most loved songs by Marku Ribas in a live rendition with just him and his guitar. When we listen to this song we always have the urge to write down the lyrics of his peculiar scatting. Then we give up, it's too complicated, hahaha! But if anyone takes the task, we publish here in this blog Trio Mocotó - Voltei Amor They started as support band for Jorge Ben in the most praised phase of his long career and managed to keep it up together after parting ways with J.B. In the beginnings of the century they had a comeback with a new and modern formation, releasing a very good album, ....... , and touring Europe where I saw them live in London. This video was recorded around this time. Luiz Melodia - Fadas [feat. Elza Soares] I heard this song for the first time in Do Cóccix Até o Pescoço,Elza Soares' album released in 2002, that was the turning point into modernity of the veteran artist. Later she sung the same theme in a live acoustic version with the author, Luiz Melodia. Elza's version of this tango is beautiful, but the silky voice of Melodia added an extra element to those verses that, in reality have no clear meaning, just a strange beauty. Jards Macalé - Negra Melodia In this one camera video recorded at a show at SESC Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro but with a good sound we see Jards Macalé performing his classic Negra Melodia, a reggae recorded in 1977. The video was posted by La Cumbuca, a 'carioca' site specialized in spreading the cultural weekly program of Rio, a must if you are in town and want to know what is happening in the city. Jorge Mautner - Quero ser locomotiva That freaky moment of your day. I couldn’t find a good video recording of Mautner performing his 'mantric' song that enchanted me so much in the album 'Para Iluminar a Cidade' when I was a 9-year-old kid and in my search I stumbled upon this lip-sync version made by a little girl and I simply couldn't stop watching this funny piece. All that right below the complete playlist of CAS 501 !
