For the complete playlist, click 'READ MORE' below We start the show with 30 minutes of music by bands that were part of the Manguebit (‘Manguebeat' for some) movement, to introduce one of the new albums highlighted in our show: Dj Dolores and Recife 19. Dolores is a long-time friend of the CAS and we were helping him promote his mini European tour. Due to bureaucratic details he missed his dates in the UK and we quickly improvised two emergency performances to fill the gap on his tour. One at Diobar with the girls from Madame Baião and another one at La Rouge (Raval) to record a live material for the Caipirinha Appreciation Society. You’ll hear this audio in a future CAS show. The other band highlighted is...
...from the ABC Paulista (ABC designs an area formed by 3 industrial cities near Sao Paulo) called Nomade Orquestra. They are releasing their 3rd album called Vox Populi. This instrumental big band, that in their first two albums mixed west-African themes with Ethiopian jazz and North American styles, now adds a new element to their work: vocals. Singers Juçara Marçal, Russo Passapusso (Baiana System), Siba and Edgar each lend their voice for two tracks on the album.
Our vids of the week are: Chico Science & Nação Zumbi - Maco A video of the classic song released in the album Afrociberdelia, made with rare footage by Raul Machado. Mostly shot in Super 8 on a live performance of Chico Science & Nação Zumbi during the festival Abril Pro Rock 1996 at Circo Maluco Beleza. Dona Onete & BNegão - Musa da Babilônia This song is from the new album by Dona Onete called Rebujo and is a partnership with BNegão. We from the CAS have special reasons to love this song: it is about a muse spotted by B. and Dona Onete in the alleyways of Morro da Babilônia, the community located in Leme just behind our flat. The amazing animation is created by Bárbara Coimbra. Caiçara - Paciência Paciência is a track from the new EP ‘Groove Rural’ by Fred Caiçara, resident in Recife, also known for his work with the band A Gravina. Shot at a theatre stage environment, this low-budget clip is directed by Guilherme Bota and João Pedro. Kid Hyena - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (21st Century Update/Edit) Despite singing in English this updated version of the poem by Gil Scott-Heron in this lyric video, Kid Hyena is a band from Barcelona and sings in Spanish and English, sometimes both in the same song. This duo (Matik & Masha) is composed by a girl rapping, playing keyboards and tap-dancing percussions and a guy singing and playing a bass as if it was a guitar and here they deliver a potent track criticizing our virtual times with some references to the Kiwi rugby war cry. Weird. BUT FIRST, THE PLAYLIST:
Chico Science & Nação Zumbi - Maco
Dona Onete & BNegão - Musa da Babilônia
