Note that in Rio, up until the late 90s, the sacred and the profane mingled in the NYE party on Copacabana beach, with many 'terreiros' from Rio represented in a really beautiful party.
That was when the people from Rio went to the seashore to offer gifts to Yemanjá, the goddess of the sea.
All that said, although she is celebrated on New Year's Eve, February 2nd is the official day of Yemanja, the "water goddess" according to Afro-Brazilian tradition.
